ERTAMODEL
At every Ankuran Science Centre, learning follows a single, deliberate structure: ERTA — Explore, Reflect, Think, Apply. It’s not a slogan sitting above our activities; it’s the sequence every lab session, every model, and every experiment is built around. Where a typical classroom moves from explanation to memorisation, ERTA reverses the order — students encounter the phenomenon first, and understanding is something they build, not something they’re handed.
E - Experience
Every session begins with direct, hands-on contact with a phenomenon, model, or experiment — before any explanation is given. A student might spin a gyroscope, mix two solutions, or examine a plant cell under a microscope, with no worksheet telling them what they’re supposed to see. The goal at this stage isn’t correctness; it’s noticing. Curiosity is allowed to lead.
R - Reflection
Once students have explored, facilitators guide a structured conversation: What did you notice? What surprised you? What did you expect to happen, and what actually happened? This step slows students down before they jump to conclusions, and it’s where misconceptions surface — safely, out loud, and before they harden into wrong answers memorised for an exam.
T - Theory
With observations on the table, students are guided to connect what they’ve seen to the underlying scientific concept. This is where the “why” gets built — not delivered as a fact to remember, but assembled from the evidence students generated themselves in the first two steps. Facilitators ask questions rather than supply answers, so the concept is one the student arrives at, not one they’re told.
A - Application
Understanding that isn’t used tends to fade. In the final step, students apply the concept to a new problem, a different experiment, or a real-world scenario — something they haven’t seen before. This is also where ERTA reinforces school learning directly: the same concept a student is exploring at the Centre often maps to what they’re covering in class, so the “apply” step does double duty, deepening both.
WHY IT WORKS
ERTA turns a 90-minute weekly session into something durable. Students don’t leave with a fact copied into a notebook — they leave with a concept they tested, questioned, and used. It’s the same four steps whether the topic is Newton’s laws in the Physics lab, titration in Chemistry, or cell structure in Biology, and it’s the same four steps at every Ankuran Centre — Durgapur, Trichy, and Madurai — so a student’s experience of how they learn is consistent, even as what they learn changes week to week.
